Cats have the ability to concentrate their urine. However, if their urine is over-concentrated, they run a greater risk of developing stones. The amount of water that is drunk depends on the food given: a cat needs 200 to 300ml of water every day if he eats dry food, whereas he can go without it if he eats tinned food. Make sure that you leave a bowl of fresh drinking water freely available and change it twice a day if possible.
Most adult dogs are happy to eat a single meal a day, especially if they have a normal lifestyle. If your dog is large, you can feed him smaller amounts several times a day. Similarly, puppies can be fed several times a day. Lactating bitches and working dogs can be given at least 3 to 4 meals a day.
Ideally, cats should eat 3 meals a day. After the age of 8 months, cats can be happy with just 2 meals a day. If you use dry food, you can leave your cat to eat his ration as and when he wants to.
It is strongly advisable to avoid sweet foods (sugar, cakes and chocolate) because they will make him put on weight and can be damaging to his health. Also avoid ham, pâtés, bacon and sausages and starchy foods.
Do not give your cat poor quality fresh meat (too much fat and gristle) or starchy foods, which are difficult to digest. If you give your cat milk, it is best to dilute it first.
Adult dogs have trouble digesting lactose and so milk can cause flatulence. Only give milk to puppies to avoid upsetting your dog’s digestion.
